Flutter into “The Butterfly Corner Qur’aan”

The Butterfly Corner has become a beloved name in South African Muslim households, evoking nostalgia deeply embedded in the hearts of our children. Sameera Bamath, a favourite children’s media personality on Radio Islam and Hilaal TV, as well as an educator and mother to all our little butterflies, has written a captivating book for children. Drawing from the hadith in Fazaa’il-e-A’maal, she curates a collection of heartfelt stories inspired by these teachings. Aimed at children aged 5-13, the book seeks to nurture a love for the Qur’aan in a fun and interactive manner.

AMWASA Correspondent Faeeza Nakhuda sat down with the respected author to delve into the vibrant world of The Butterfly Corner Qur’aan.

What was the driving inspiration behind The Butterfly Corner Qur’aan?

The book is designed to inspire young readers with captivating stories that instil a love for the Qur’aan. I wanted to create an engaging, relatable way to nurture their connection to Islam.

With your book launch being on the onset of Ramadhan (the month of the Qur’aan), what would you like your ‘little butterflies’ to learn from your book at this present time?

I needed to emphasise the importance of reciting, understanding, and living by the Qur’aan. Through its stories, children can learn about the virtues of reading and memorising the Qur’aan, the rewards of perseverance, and the beauty of making the Qur’aan a central part of their lives.

As an author, we often acquire something from our journey of writing. What would you say is your reflection from the journey of writing The Butterfly Corner Qur’aan?

Writing The Butterfly Corner Qur’aan was a deeply personal and spiritual journey for me. My book reflects a heartfelt dedication to teaching my own children about the Qur’aan in a way that is easy… yet inspiring. I also wanted to highlight the importance of small, consistent efforts in seeking Allah SWT’s pleasure

As a Muslimah, what legacy would you like to leave behind?

I am passionate about education and empowering young minds. Through my book and work as an educator and media personality, I want to aim for a legacy of nurturing confident, knowledgeable, and spiritually connected young Muslims. I hope that I can achieve that someday, In sha Allah!

What would you love to achieve regarding your book?

I want to fester a lifelong love for the Qur’aan in children, making its lessons relatable and engaging. It also serves as a guide for parents and teachers to incorporate Qur’anic teachings into everyday life.

How long did it take you to write the book?

It took months of careful planning, research, and writing. With being a mother, educator, principal &  media personality, my time is limited. I wrote at every opportunity I had.

Which story is closest to your heart and why?

Each story carries a profound lesson about the Qur’aan, but one that stands out is “Little Sulaiman’s Big Journey”. It emphasises the rewards of memorising the Qur’aan, perseverance in learning and the honour it brings to one’s parents. This story beautifully captures the essence of dedication and faith. I hope to have that honour someday.  In sha Allah.

Describe your book, tell us why it is unique and what makes it stand out?

What makes it unique is its ability to blend everyday scenarios with Islamic teachings, making the Qur’aan feel relevant to young readers. The book uses storytelling as a powerful tool to instil love and reverence for the Qur’aan while encouraging children to act upon its teachings.

Sameera Bamath has truly made a remarkable effort, even designing the cover in accordance with Islamic teachings, ensuring it is free from “moorat” (eyes), making it suitable for bedtime reading and placement on the bedside table. Like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly from its chrysalis, this AMWASA-approved book reflects the author’s deep passion and love for the Qur’aan, creating a delightful resource for children to cherish as they grow. It fosters moments of connection between parents and their children, sparking a butterfly effect that instills a love of Islam. May Allah SWT accept her beautiful efforts and grant her success. Ameen.
