Embracing Social Media: A Guide for Muslim Women Authors in South Africa

Many authors, especially within our Muslim community, feel overwhelmed by the idea of engaging with social media. The uncertainty about where to start and the perception of social media as a necessary evil can be discouraging. Does this resonate with you?

Often, social media is seen purely as a tool to gain more business, buyers, or readers. Posts and updates are crafted with this mindset. However, to truly succeed, it’s essential to shift your perspective from “What can I get?” to “What value can I offer to others?”

How to Be a Bold User of Social Media Today

Strategise and Select the Best Platform

Instead of just posting blindly as and when you get time or inspiration, strategise! Identify the social media platform that aligns best with your book, personality, and business. Take the first step and join that platform today.

Offer Meaningful Contributions

Build rapport and relationships by contributing meaningfully. Keep your posts short and engaging, as people often scan through content quickly. Your social pages should reflect the good values of the books you’re putting out into the world.

Maintain Control

Remember, you are in control of your social media usage. Decide how much time you’re willing to dedicate and make it work for you, not the other way around. You don’t need to post every single day. Depending on your availability, aim for:

  • Story interactions most days – behind the scenes, a day in your life, etc.
  • At least two posts on your feed a week. See number 5 below for ideas on what to post.
  • At least one reel a week

Get to Know Your Audience and Respect Them

Before you post, imagine your children reading what you’re about to share. If you wouldn’t want them to read, see, or hear it, don’t post it. It’s nearly impossible to retract once it’s out there.

Give Back

Don’t just sell, sell, sell on social media. Offer value in your posts. As a guideline, consider sharing 25% educational posts, 25% inspirational posts, 25% to show your personality, 25% selling your book. Not sure what to post? We have a free list of prompts just for you!

Utilise Links Effectively

Mention others by name and use the @ and # symbols to extend your reach. Links can significantly amplify your message.

Master Your Platform

Become an expert in the etiquette, protocols, and usage of your preferred social media platform. If you’re not sure, ask us!

Engage Wholeheartedly

When you’re using social media, give it your full attention. Make it a regular habit, not an occasional one. Thoughtfully consider your posts and connections to foster relationships.

Deliver Value

Ensure your conversations are purposeful and genuine. Authenticity helps you build trust and attract readers who want to know more about you and your work.

Encourage Two-Way Communication

Use questions, pictures, and videos to engage your audience. Be enthusiastic with both new and regular followers to build lasting connections.

Be Discerning

Remember, you don’t have to respond to every message. Be wise and selective, as not all interactions are beneficial. You also don’t have to follow every single person who follows you. Curate your feed to fit in with your values.

Showcase Your Culture and Values

Share aspects of your culture and values through your posts. This personal touch helps you connect with readers on a deeper level, helps you to reach your target audience, and allows them to understand your unique perspective.

Leverage Visual Content

Utilise images and videos to capture attention and convey your message more effectively. Visual content is often more engaging and can significantly increase your reach. Do some research on faceless posts and reels. You don’t have to compromise on your values.

Stay Updated with Trends

Keep an eye on current social media trends and adapt your strategy accordingly. Staying relevant can help you maintain and grow your audience. There are plenty of trending a capella tracks to choose from.

Collaborate with Others

Partner with fellow authors, influencers, and bloggers to expand your reach. Collaboration can introduce you to new audiences and provide mutual support. In fact, that’s exactly the reason AMWASA was formed.

Monitor and Reflect

Regularly review your social media performance. Reflect on what works and what doesn’t, and adjust your strategy to better meet your goals.

Prioritise Mental Health

Social media can be overwhelming. Take breaks when needed and prioritise your mental well-being. Engage in activities that refresh and inspire you.
